MYTHICAL SCENTS FOR THE MODERN NOSE: ELDEN FRAGRANCES

I recently discovered Elden Fragrances and I’m excited to share my new findings with you.  Elden Fragrances is an innovative line of perfumes that is inspired by superheroes, fantasy and pop culture. Very cool!

Now I’m well aware that translating superheroes into scent is nothing new. Thierry Mugler’s B*Men which launched in 2004 was supposedly inspired by superheroes from Mugler’s favorite comic books dating back to his childhood. JADS International launched The Avengers cologne and perfume right before the Marvel’s film premiere in 2012. Just last month Jean-Paul Gaultier came out with a limited-edition super makeover of his iconic fragrances Classique and Le Male with none other than Wonder Woman and Superman.

But Elden Fragrances has a different approach. None of the Eden Fragrances perfumes are named after specific superheroes or fantasy figures. They were created with the approach of calling to mind dreams and fantasies, some that you may never have shared with anyone.

The Fairy Tale Princess Collection, with whimsical names such as A Daughter of Triton, A Dream and a Glow, and A Little Pixie Dust, are primarily feminine scents – no surprise there. Designed for the powerful princess who wants to make up her own mind and write her own story, these are intended for the girl who wants more out of life than being pampered, posing as arm candy and wearing dazzling attire to gain the admiration of a prince.

On the company website, A little Pixie Dust is described as “Light, airy florals give way to sharply envious green notes topped with a generous sparkling of fairy dust.” What I smelled first was a fresh blast of sparkling aldehydes and green apple before intoxicating jasmine and tuberose made their way in and sent me in a new direction. I am told that narcissus and absinthe are also present but possibly they were hiding in the pixie dust. I’d have to call this more green than floral and if you are a lover of green florals you really should try this.

A Daughter of Triton is a light and uplifting scent with a subtle sweetness to it. I’m imagining that this daughter of Triton is named after one of the seven daughters from the Disney film The Little Mermaid and probably was Ariel.  If you know your Greek mythology, you’ll recall that Triton was the messenger of the sea and son of Poseiden and Amphritite. According to ancient mythology, Triton had a daughter named Pallas who suffered an early and tragic death after being mortally wounded in a mock battle with Triton’s foster daughter, Athena. This perfume is definitely too bright and cheery to be named after that daughter. Featured notes in this perfume include lily, iris, cool water, melon and cucumber. It may be named after a mermaid, but it’s calm, and tranquil enough for a die-hard landlubber.

Another collection in the line, called The Wizards House Collection, is made up of more unisex scents according to the company website. I bravely decided to give Serpent’s Shadow a try and was happily surprised. This one can be best described as darker and slightly dangerous smelling, though not overly heavy. There are aquatic notes as well as violet and lotus but for the life of me I can’t put my finger on what gives it this mildly intimidating and cunning quality. It’s definitely there and if I can figure it out I’ll post an update.

If I had to pick a personal favorite it would probably be A Daughter of Triton but all three of these were really interesting and unique.

Disclaimer: I recently had the opportunity to chat with Ellen Walsh, the company’s founder, who had sent me samples to try with no pressure to write a review. I enjoyed learning about her personal journey as a perfumer, both the challenges and the successes, and hearing about some exciting plans for the future of Elden Fragrances. She also revealed to me that her current personal favorites from their line are “A Gleam and a Glow” and “A Memory of December”.

For more on Elden Fragrances, the company website is https://eldenfragrances.com. Fragrances are sold in 5 ml., 15 ml., 30 ml., 60 ml., as well as sample size.

Until the next time,
