You have just a week left to snag the perfect gift for mom, that singular force who we can credit or blame for everything that’s gone right or wrong in our lives. Being a mother isn’t easy and she may make mistakes along the way ? but most try their very hardest at what is a challenging unpaid job. No mother ever knows what’s in store for her before the moment arrives. Her life is changed forever in ways she never imagined or expected.
On Mother’s Day you should give mom something indulgent, not present her with a boring item like a useful cooking utensil (she won’t be cooking next Sunday I hope) or clothing (if it’s a size too small or large you’ve ruined her day). Flowers and chocolates are always appreciated but let’s face it cliché.
The thing about being a mom is that sexy and glamorous it ain’t. “Mom jeans”, which are again having a moment in destroyed washes and cropped options, are known for being unflattering and unfashionable. There’s a well-known saying that you leave your dignity at the door of the maternity room that sums it up nicely.
Chances are your mother doesn’t buy herself perfume often which is another reason why it’s an excellent choice for a gift. It shows effort and thought on your part and if you get it right she’ll be thinking of you every time she spritzes it on. It’s been proven that scent is the strongest link to memory and every time she smells it she’ll be reminded of your love and won’t question whether it was all worth it.
I talked about some of my top choices last year around this time but the perfume world never sleeps and there are some really impressive ones who’ve recently entered the scene.
Here are 5 of my favorite new perfumes for the woman who deserves an indulgent treat on her special day:
Proenza Schouler Arizona
This captivating fragrance is the first ever perfume by fashion brand Proenza Schouler and it’s created quite a buzz since its release only a few months ago. It takes its inspiration from the night-blooming cactus flower – which actually doesn’t have much of a scent – and the feeling of adventure. Arizona is the bottled essence of daytime in the desert and is feminine without being overly sweet or floral. It’s a difficult fragrance to pin down but you can read more about it here.
A 3.4 oz bottle is available at Proenza Schouler for $130.
Tom Ford Eau de Soleil Blanc
Launched at the beginning of this year, Eau de Soleil Blanc is bright, crisp and drenched with sparkling citrus. A vibrant twist on the floral amber and warmth mirrors the crystalline reflection of the white sun. Tom Ford scents are known for their quality, longevity and high price tag. There’s more about it from me here.
A 3.4 oz bottle is available at Sephora for $171 (plus 3X points on fragrance through 5/13 ?)
Gucci Bloom
On my short list of those I’ve been loving lately is this recent release from the House of Gucci. It’s perfect for spring and will be adored by those who gravitate to crisp florals. Some straight-up florals can smell dated or artificial, but Bloom is a modern floral that literally smells like a garden. If this sounds like her (or you), you can learn more about it here.
A 3.4 oz bottle is available at Neiman Marcus for $124.
Nest Wisteria Blue
Nest Fragrances latest addition to the Spring/Summer 2018 season is a soothing, aquatic and fresh fragrance housed in a gorgeous bottle. It sounds weird but if blue were a fragrance this would be it. I’m still wondering about that. If your mum enjoys Nest candles which is what the brand is best known for then this will be a treat. The brand’s founder, Laura Slatkin, helped to create the first charter school dedicated to autism after her son was diagnosed with this life-changing disorder .
A 1.7 oz bottle is available at Sephora for $72.
Hermés Twilly
Hermès is a brand that spells luxury and they’ve produced many amazing fragrances. I’ve written about their magnificent Un Jardin Sur Le Nil and this one also gets my enthusiastic vote as gift-worthy. If ginger, sandalwood and tuberose are what she goes for and you aren’t able to spring for a Hermés (which start at $400) then this is an affordable option.
A 2.9 oz bottle is available at Hermés for $130.
Prices shown for each of these perfumes are for the largest available bottle sizes. Smaller bottle sizes, as well as other scented body products such as lotions, are also available for most of these perfumes.
Any of these are excellent choices that will keep on giving long after the Mother’s Day festivities are over. No time better than now to help her swap out the old and find her new signature scent.
Cheers and Happy Mother’s Day,
